01

A look around before anything else

A first visit is mostly about getting comfortable. There is time to see the room, meet the team and ask questions before any treatment is discussed, so the chair stops being the unknown.

02

Prevention while teeth are new

Sealants close off the chewing surfaces and the pits and fissures where decay tends to start. Research consistently finds sealants reduce decay in the back teeth of children, which is why they are placed soon after those teeth arrive.

03

Treatment when it is needed

Fillings, extractions, pulp therapy and space maintainers are all done here. A space maintainer holds the gap after a baby tooth comes out so the permanent tooth has room to arrive in the right place.

Children’s dentistry questions,

Yes. Children are seen in the same Timonium office as the rest of the family. Dr. Steven W. Haywood, DDS completed a U.S. Air Force advanced residency that covered pediatric dentistry alongside oral surgery, orthodontics, endodontics and oral facial prosthodontics. Call (410) 453-9399 to ask about an appointment for your child.

A first visit is deliberately unhurried. There is time to look around the room, meet the team and ask questions before anything is discussed. The aim is that a child leaves knowing what the chair, the mirror and the light are for, so the next appointment starts from somewhere familiar.

A sealant is a thin coating that seals the chewing surfaces and all the pits and fissures of a tooth, so bacterial byproducts and simple sugars cannot be harboured there. They are used on both adult and children’s teeth, and are usually placed on the back teeth soon after those teeth come through.

Nitrous oxide is available for children who find appointments difficult, and it wears off quickly at the end of the visit. Before that, the simplest thing is time: a visit where nothing is done except looking around often does more for anxiety than anything else. Talk to the team when you book so the appointment is planned that way.

If a baby tooth comes out early, the teeth beside it can drift into the gap and leave no room for the permanent tooth. A space maintainer is cemented in place to hold that space open. Normal eating can resume about an hour after it is fitted, and it stays until the permanent tooth begins to come through.

It is treatment for a baby tooth where decay has reached the nerve, or pulp, inside the tooth. Treating the pulp lets the tooth stay in place rather than being removed, which keeps the space for the permanent tooth underneath. Afterwards the lip, tongue and cheek stay numb for a few hours.

If an anaesthetic was used, the lips, tongue and cheek can stay numb for several hours, and children very easily bite a lip or tongue without feeling it. Avoid chewing and hot drinks until the numbness has fully worn off. Some sensitivity to hot, cold and pressure afterwards is normal. Full aftercare is on our post-op instructions page.

Yes. Interceptive orthodontics can guide teeth while a child is still growing, and Invisalign Teen clear aligners are available for older children. Which one suits depends on what is happening with the bite, so it starts with an examination.

The office is out of network with all insurers. Payment is made at the time of service and the office files the claim on your behalf so any reimbursement goes to you. That keeps treatment decisions between you and Dr. Haywood rather than an insurer.

Call the Timonium office on (410) 453-9399. Mention it is a first visit for a child so the appointment can be given the extra time it needs.
