Prepare the anchor teeth
The teeth on each side of the gap, called abutment teeth, are prepared and an impression is taken to guide your custom bridge. A temporary bridge protects the teeth and holds them in place until your next visit.
Fit your permanent bridge
At the second appointment the temporary comes off and your permanent bridge is checked for fit and a balanced bite before it’s placed. You’ll go home knowing how to clean under the replacement tooth.

A dental bridge is made of two dental crowns and a pontic, an artificial tooth. The crowns fit over the teeth next to the gap, called abutment teeth, and the pontic fills the space left by the missing tooth, restoring function and the look of your smile.
A fixed bridge uses two crowns, or the dental bonding technique, to attach the artificial tooth to the neighboring teeth, and can only be removed with professional equipment. Bridges are usually completed in two appointments: one to prepare the teeth, take an impression and place a temporary bridge, and a second to fit the permanent bridge and check your bite.
Avoid sticky foods like caramel and chewing gum, and don’t leave the temporary off even if you feel fine, because your teeth can move and the new bridge may no longer fit. If it comes off, put a little Fixodent inside, place it back on and call the office during business hours to have it re-cemented. Read bridge post-op instructions.
Brush and floss your bridge every day. You’ll need floss threaders or other aids to reach and clean under the replacement tooth. If it feels like you’re biting first or harder on the bridge, call for a simple adjustment so the tooth doesn’t become sore.
