Every dental office says it cares about patients. At the Timonium practice of Dr. Steven W. Haywood, DDS, that care comes down to three priorities: family, facts and a friendly, comfortable, safe office. Family means being the practice people turn to for everyone they care about, including when something goes wrong. Facts means you see what the dentist sees and hear your options, and the cost, before anything begins. And comfort and safety means a clean, spa-like office where nervous patients are planned for rather than rushed.

Here is what each of those three priorities looks like when you walk through the door, and how they fit together at a first visit.

Who Dr. Steven Haywood is

For over three decades, Dr. Haywood has cared for smiles across Timonium, Towson and the greater Baltimore area. Dr. Haywood graduated with distinction from the University of Detroit dental school in 1987, was hand-picked for the U.S. Air Force advanced residency program, with internships in oral surgery, orthodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry and oral facial prosthodontics, and served in the Gulf War, earning a USAF Commendation Medal. Cosmetic training followed at New York University’s Aesthetic Continuum, with advanced TMJ and reconstructive training at the Peter Dawson Institute.

Dr. Haywood is an Elite Invisalign Provider, a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. In Dr. Haywood’s own words, what matters most is “helping people feel confident and comfortable with a smile they’re truly proud of.” Read the full bio of Dr. Haywood.

Priority 1: family

Care for more than one generation

Family dentistry is part of the practice: checkups, cleanings and gum care, Invisalign Teen for teenagers, and a comfortable micro-air filling process for people of all ages. Super sealants protect the chewing surfaces of adult and children’s teeth, and calcium rebuilding treatments help strengthen enamel for patients of all ages. Explore general and family dentistry.

When someone you love has an emergency

Dental emergencies rarely wait for a convenient day. Dr. Haywood is available for true dental emergencies for existing patients and their friends and families. New patients with emergency needs are seen on weekdays during normal business hours, based on availability. Call as early in the day as you can. Knocked-out teeth can be treated for patients of any age: put the tooth in milk and call right away. See emergency dental care.

Teens and parents

For teenagers put off by the idea of braces, Invisalign Teen uses clear, removable aligners designed for teens, with progress that is easy to track. A parent or legal guardian must be present during the consultation of a patient under the age of 18, so parents are part of the conversation from the start.

Friends and family referrals

If you are happy with your care, the people closest to you are welcome too. The practice offers smile gift cards when you refer friends and family.

Priority 2: facts

See what the dentist sees

Your digital X-rays appear on screen right away, and intraoral cameras zoom in on each section of your mouth, so problem areas can be pointed out and explained rather than simply described. For cosmetic work, cosmetic imaging changes digital photos of your smile on screen, so you see a before-and-after preview before you commit.

Your options, including what can wait

Every visit starts with a conversation, not a drill. The team walks you through what needs doing, what can safely wait and exactly what it costs, before anything begins. When a more conservative option will do the job, it comes first. Treatment starts only when you approve.

Straight answers about cost

People want to know the cost of veneers, implants or a bridge before they decide, and they should. Fees depend on each case, so they are set after an exam, and you get a clear estimate up front. One patient’s review sums it up: “Always detailed the work to be done and the cost.” Kelley Fisher, the practice’s Patient Care and Treatment Coordinator, is the go-to for customized treatment plans, insurance questions and financing. If another office has already given you an implant plan, second opinions are complimentary.

The facts about insurance

The practice is privately owned and out of network with insurance companies. You pay at the time of service, and the office files the claim on your behalf so your plan can reimburse you for anything it covers. Health savings and flex plans are welcome.

Priority 3: a friendly, comfortable and safe office

Clean and safe

Every treatment room is cleaned and sterilized after each patient. Digital X-rays use less radiation than standard dental X-rays, and the practice’s Green CT scanner creates accurate 3D images with a much lower radiation dose. Fillings are tooth-colored and mercury-free, and restorations are non-toxic, metal-free and biocompatible.

Comfortable

The office is spa-inspired, with paraffin wax hand treatments, calming aromatherapy and a Nespresso station. Appointments are scheduled with room to breathe, so you are never rushed, and you see the same familiar faces at every visit. Take the office tour.

Friendly to nervous patients

If dental visits make you anxious, tell the team, and your care is planned around it. Laughing gas is complimentary on request, and oral conscious sedation is available. Learn about sedation dentistry.

How the three priorities come together at a first visit

  1. Before you arrive. Complete your new patient forms online, and bring a list of questions and any concerns.
  2. A conversation. You talk about your dental history, your health and medications, your goals and whether fear is an issue.
  3. An exam you can see. Dr. Haywood evaluates your teeth, gums and bite, with X-rays and photos on screen.
  4. A plan with the facts. You hear your options, what can wait and what each one costs, and nothing starts until you approve.

More on that visit is in how Dr. Steven Haywood, DDS plans your dental care, and you can meet the people involved in our Timonium dental team.

A full range of care in one office

Because families have different needs, the practice covers a wide range in the same Timonium office: general dentistry and 60-minute cleanings, porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, Invisalign, holistic and mercury-free care, and sedation dentistry.

Paying for your care

Financing is available through CareCredit, with no-interest options for up to 12 months, and Cherry, with plans from 3 to 24 months. Invisalign can also be paid monthly in the office after a down payment.
