You can evaluate your smile more objectively than a quick glance in the mirror allows, but only up to a point. The mirror shows a reversed image, from one angle, under bathroom lighting, of teeth you have looked at for years. A structured self-check fixes some of that: look in natural light, from the front and the side, and go through the same list of features a cosmetic dentist looks at. For a truly objective view, a cosmetic evaluation adds an exam of your teeth, gums and bite and a digital preview of what could change.

This checklist from the Timonium office of Dr. Steven W. Haywood, DDS walks you through that self-check, what each finding can mean, and what an evaluation adds that a mirror cannot.

Why it is hard to judge your own smile

Beauty is personal. If something about your smile bothers you, that matters, whatever anyone else thinks. But when you are simply not sure, a few things get in the way of an honest look:

  • Familiarity. You stop noticing a chipped edge or a slowly darkening tooth because you see it every day.
  • The mirror flips your face. Other people see your smile the other way around, and small asymmetries can look different to them.
  • You only see one angle. Missing back teeth, worn edges and the gum line often show when you talk or laugh, not when you pose.
  • Lighting changes color. Warm indoor light can hide yellowing; harsh light can exaggerate it.

Photos have their own distortions, which we cover in feel camera-ready with a smile makeover.

Set up a fair self-check

  1. Stand near a window in daylight rather than under bathroom bulbs.
  2. Look at a relaxed smile, a full smile and your teeth while you talk.
  3. Take a few photos at arm’s length from the front and from each side, so you can see what others see.
  4. Compare the photos with the checklist below, one feature at a time, and write down what you notice.

The smile checklist

Color

Are your teeth an even color, or do some look yellow or gray? Is one tooth darker than its neighbors? Staining from coffee, tea and red wine tends to affect many teeth, while a single dark tooth can have a different cause and is worth having checked.

Shape and edges

Look along the biting edges of your front teeth. Are there chips, cracks or edges worn flat? Are the two front teeth roughly the same length? Worn, uneven edges can make a smile look older and can be a sign of grinding.

Alignment

Are any teeth crooked, overlapping, turned or crowded? Are there gaps? Overlapping teeth are not only a cosmetic concern: they leave places for bacteria to collect and are harder to keep clean.

Proportion and the gum line

When you smile fully, how much gum shows? Do the upper teeth look short? A gummy smile is often caused by extra gum tissue rather than short teeth. Also check whether the gum line is even from side to side.

Missing teeth

Laugh in front of the mirror or look at a candid photo. Many people assume a missing back tooth does not show. Often it does, especially when you talk, laugh or eat.

Old dental work

Look for dark or silver fillings that flash when you open wide, crowns that no longer match, and teeth that have been patched several times. A filling that is worn at the edges can also let decay develop underneath it.

How your smile makes you act

This one is not about teeth. Do you cover your mouth when you laugh, or smile with closed lips in photos? Hiding a smile can make you seem shy or even unfriendly, and it is often the clearest sign that something is worth looking into.

Crooked teeth in Timonium, MD: what your self-check means

If alignment topped your list, you have more than one route. Invisalign clear aligners move teeth gradually into a straighter position, and both Invisalign and metal braces are offered at the practice. If you would rather not straighten, veneers and bonding can make crooked teeth look straighter, sometimes in as little as one or two visits, whether you want a subtle improvement or a dramatic change. When teeth need to move before any veneer work, Invisalign can shift them first. The full comparison is in crooked or gapped teeth: your options, and Invisalign in Timonium explains how aligners work.

Not every difference needs fixing

A self-check is not a list of flaws to erase. Some people love a small gap between their front teeth or a slightly individual tooth and would never change it. Natural teeth have character, and a smile that is perfectly uniform can look less natural, not more. Mark the features you like, too, so they are protected in any plan.

What an objective evaluation adds

A cosmetic evaluation with Dr. Haywood goes beyond what you can see yourself:

  • An exam of health, not just looks. Your teeth, gums and bite are examined, because cosmetic changes need a healthy foundation and a bite that can support them.
  • Your smile on screen. With cosmetic imaging, digital photos of your smile are changed on the imaging computer, so you see a before-and-after preview of your own teeth. It is part of every cosmetic evaluation at the practice.
  • A trained eye for proportion. Dr. Haywood is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and trained at NYU’s Aesthetic Continuum, and designs each smile around your goals with a natural, never-fake look.
  • A trial before anything is final. With porcelain veneers, you evaluate a “test drive” set before the final set is made.

From checklist to plan

Bring your notes and photos to your consultation. They help Dr. Haywood quickly understand what you want to change and what you want to keep. Your plan may be a single treatment, such as whitening or bonding a chip, or a combination. Treatment starts only when you approve. Cost, insurance and financing

Every smile is different, so fees are set after your evaluation. The practice is out of network with insurance companies: you pay at the time of service, and the office files the claim on your behalf so your plan can reimburse you for anything it covers. Health savings and flex plans are welcome, and financing is available through CareCredit, with no-interest options for up to 12 months, and Cherry, with plans from 3 to 24 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is it vain to want to change my smile?

No. How you feel about your smile affects how freely you use it. If it bothers you, it is worth a conversation.

Can I see what my smile could look like before deciding?

Yes. Before-and-after imaging is part of every cosmetic evaluation, so you can see potential changes on screen before you commit.

Are crooked teeth only a cosmetic problem?

Not always. Overlapping teeth are harder to keep clean, and a correct bite spreads pressure evenly, which reduces the potential for wear and breakage.

Can I see results from real patients?

Yes. The smile gallery shows before-and-after photos of actual patients of the practice.
